Avoiding Plagiarism

A guide to acknowledging the work of others and citing your resources properly.

Plagiarism: An Overview

Why Learn About Plagiarism?

Dictionary.com definition of plagiarism:

  • "an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author."

Put simply: If you use someone's else's work, give them credit.

Cite Your Sources

CU professors expect you to cite your sources for research papers, projects, and assignments.

From Cedarville's Academic Integrity Statement and Procedures:

  • "The Academic Integrity Pledge is a commitment to live with integrity in all areas of life including the classroom. All forms of academic dishonesty violate this pledge and could result in dismissal from this community."

You can also review your Student Handbook for more on this policy. Check the library's citation help page for additional resources.

Ask for Help

Take some time to familiarize yourself with the resources here at this site. If you have questions, talk with your professor, visit the Writing Center, or ask a librarian.

Cedarville's faculty and staff are committed to your success. We are here to serve you in any way we can!
